“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting” —The Risen Christ in the Book of Acts

The fact is that the Book of Acts provides powerful portrayals of the kind of ministry fruitfulness that does indeed occur when Jesus’ disciples stay connected to him in a manner that is mystical-experiential as well as volitional-intellectual. As a whole, this document records for us how Christ’s first followers, filled with his Spirit, proceeded to turn the world on its ear in his name (see Acts 17:6)! However, when we drill a bit more deeply into the text, we find that Luke describes not only the things that Christ’s Spirit empowered his disciples to say and do (e.g., Acts 4:8–13, 31; 8:39; 9:31; 10:9–23; 13:2, 9–12) but also the things that were accomplished by “the Lord” himself (e.g., Acts 2:46–47; 11:21; 14:3; 16:14), the things that were accomplished on behalf of Christ via the agency of an angel (e.g., Acts 5:17–20; 8:26; 10:3–8; 12:7–11; 27:23–26), and finally those times when, in an apparently mystical manner, Jesus himself showed up alongside someone in need of a personal word of admonition, encouragement, or ministry guidance (see Acts 7:55–56; 9:3–6, 10–17; 18:9–10; 22:17–21; 23:11).

Talk about an ongoing experience of intimate interactivity with the risen Christ! Truly, we need look no further than the Book of Acts to be convinced that the possibility of such a relationship possesses biblical warrant. Even so, our analysis of the New Testament’s support for the pursuit of Christ’s empowering presence is not yet complete.
